Montgomery County Farmland Preservation Program
Since 1990, Montgomery County has worked to preserve working farms as a valued
economic, cultural and natural resource. The county’s Farmland Preservation Program
makes it possible for eligible farmers to keep their land and to continue farming by selling an
agricultural easement. This allows an owner to keep the land but he/she no longer has the right
to build non-agricultural buildings. The land must remain in farming in perpetuity. Any future
owners must also continue to grow productive crops or pastures. Applying to the program is
voluntary. As of 2016, 154 farms have been preserved, with another four in the works. This
totals 9,089 acres of county farmland. Contact Elizabeth Emlen for more information.

Montgomery County Farm Bureau
The county’s Farm Bureau is one of 54 county chapters which comprise Pennsylvania Farm
Bureau—a state-wide farm organization representing agriculture before government, while
providing cost-saving services and information to farmers and rural families since 1950. It is
a grassroots organization whereby its members decide and implement policies for problem
solving. Monthly publications, newsletters, and social media updates keep members informed
of its work and mission. Educational events promote agriculture through programs in schools,
AgDays, farm shows and county events. Our non-profit foundation, Pennsylvania Friends
of Agriculture, operates mobile agricultural education science labs which travel to schools
statewide. The Foundation also awards agricultural scholarships for the Penn State University
College of Agricultural Sciences and Delaware Valley School of Agriculture.

Penn State Cooperative Extension – Montgomery County
The nation’s more than 100 land-grant colleges and universities have a shared critical
mission—extension. Along with teaching and research, institutions such as Penn State
“extend” their resources, solving public needs with university resources through non-formal,
non-credit programs. These programs are administered through county and regional extension
offices, which bring land-grant expertise to the most local of levels. Penn State Cooperative
Extension’s mission is to enhance quality of life by providing informal outreach educational
opportunities to individuals, families, businesses and communities. The Extension teaches
people how to solve problems, do something better, live healthier, manage resources
wisely, and create a sustainable future.
